Why Glenn's "Death" Bothers Me (Besides My Love of His Character)

So let me start off by saying that I absolutely love The Walking Dead. Despite many people claiming it's lost it's way and isn't as good as it could have been, I enjoy every single episode. Don't get me wrong, I do have my complaints. There are episodes I feel drag somewhat and of course many characters I bitch about, but it doesn't take away from my love of the show. It keeps me interested and there's nothing better than having a discussion with friends and analyzing the hell out of an episode.

Which brings me to the October 25th episode "Thank You". It's been over a week and I still have many thoughts and feelings about it that I haven't fully expressed or even processed. Like many other fans I have been debating the ambiguity of Glenn's death. I'm still in a bit of denial and find myself coming up with all the ways that Glenn could get out of the situation despite how unlikely. And yes I understand it's extremely unlikely. Regardless this whole post is not going to be another debate about whether or not Glenn is actually dead. This post is going to be about if/when we are definitely told that Glenn is confirmed as dead.

As much as I love Glenn I understand that on The Walking Dead no character is safe as much as you want them to be. I've come to expect that. Especially after already going through the loss of some characters I really liked such as Amy, Axl, Hershel, Dale, Tyreese, and Noah. What I also come to expect is that their death be 1.Impactful and 2.Worthy. Now let me explain what I mean by these three things. I may not be able to explain it well but bear with me.

Let's start with Impactful. What I mean to say to that is that it be a huge impact to those who are close to them. Yes, you can say seeing Glenn fall off the dumpster into that horde of walkers does have quite the impact, but for me it would have beared much more of an impact had may someone from his group seen his predicament and helplessly watched as he succumbed to his sad fate. Maybe Michonne and the other two could have been running past and heard Glenn's screams. It would  have made it more impactful for me in my opinion. I know what some are thinking, why would that be necessary? It really isn't but personally I don't want to watch episodes of his people wondering where he is and not knowing anything until much later. Especially Maggie.

Now onto my next point which is having his death be worthy. Am I the only one who thinks that Glenn deserved something more than being unintentionally knocked down by a dead Nicholas into the horde? I mean really I can't be the only one! Had it been that he sacrificed his well being in order to help someone I would have been satisfied, because that's who Glenn is. He is someone who wanted to help people to the best of his ability. It's why he wasn't going to just give up on Nicholas. I just feel like he deserved a much better and heroic death. It would have meant so much more. AT least to me. That way when news finally does get to the people he cared about they could take comfort in the fact that he went down trying to make sure people were safe and he stayed to true to being the person who helps people. Yes, you could say Michonne and company will believe that regardless of knowing how it happened due to knowing the risks of his plan but it just isn't enough for me.

Overall I just wish, if it actually confirmed he is dead, that he would have had a more meaningful and deserving death worthy of his character. But if this is how they chose to end his character then I guess I'll learn to accept it as it is and hope it it's impactful enough to the characters still on the show. I'm still a jumbled mess of emotions so I'm sorry if my explanations didn't come out clear enough. Here's hoping that we can put the debate to an end this coming Sunday and deal with whatever the definitive answer may be. The no knowing and the waiting is killing me.

Until next time!
